2007

- Wie began 2007 for the 4th year running at the pga tour’s Sony Open. She wore a wrist strap there for support on her injured right wrist, playing against doctors advise. She shot two relatively disappointing rounds of 78 and 76 at the event.

- While Wie intended to take a couple of months off after the Sony Open, things changed considerably when she fell in February and trying to favour her right wrist as she fell, she came down heavily on her left wirst and broke it. This lead to a more prolonged absense from the game and she didn’t play competitively between January, until the 31st of May.

- Wie played the Ginn Tribute on the 31st of May. Her comeback was obviously influenced by the fact that the lpga championship was the week after and she wanted a warm up event. It proved a mistake to come back as she suffered a setback with her wrist that she tweaked on the 10th hole. She played on until the 16th hole and realising that she wouldn’t be in any state to play the 2nd round, she withdrew from the event.

- A week later, she tried again at the lpga championship, and by some miracle she made the cut, while playing with a much weaker wrist. Unable to hit driver, she hit a mix of woods and hybrids off the tee. Luckily for her, her short game and putting were top knotch for the first two rounds and that helped her make the cut. However, with her wrist hurting again, she struggled through the last two rounds.

- Two weeks later, Wie played the US Women’s Open, but the thick usga style rough proved too much for her rehabilitating wrist and she withdrew during the 2nd round.

- Wie took a few weeks off after and came back for the Evian Masters in late July. She made the cut there and shot an under par 2nd round 71, to follow her opening 73, which was a sort of a breakthrough, her first under par round since injury, but she struggled through later rounds again.

- Next she played the Women’s British Open at St. Andrews and while she missed the cut by two strokes, she did start to strike the ball better.

- She had one week off and then played back to back events at the Canadian Women’s Open and Safeway Classic. While she missed both cuts, she had made obvious progress since her comeback and was hitting more drivers off the tee. Unfortunately for her, the obvious attention she had given to trying to get that part of her game in order meant that her short game suffered and she did not play so well around the greens.

- She started college at Stanford University towards the end of September.

- After 2 weeks at college, she came out to play her first lpga event in 6 weeks at the Samsung World Championship. She showed obvious signs of rustiness in her game during early rounds, and knotched up scores of 79, 79 and 77, before finding her game somewhat more in the 4th round to shoot an under par round of 71, just her 2nd competitive under par round since she had come back from her wrist injuries.

So what next????

- It has been reported that Michelle Wie will only play women's events in 2008, with perhaps one mens event later in the year. It is anticipated that she will play in February at the Fields Open in Hawaii.
